Religion and music involve some of our most powerful perceptual and creative abilities. The experience of playing an instrument—or of listening to a performance or a recording—can become so intense and moving that one realizes that there is something inherently sacred about music, and that the specific sequence of musical notes that one has just heard has brought higher realities to life in one’s mind or heart.
